I started with a black background, and then kept on layering translucent shapes of bright colours over each other, without sketches or anything. To make it look more bright I added some almost opaque shapes near the end. I picked colours by exaggerating the colours that were already in the picture, with brighter yellows for highlights and purples for shadows.

its like a riot of colours... but the choice of colours are really nice and not harsh. i really like this one.
